Japanese Style: Day 157

Photo of pencil/pen drawing

Today’s picture is a little dull, but hopefully you can see the potential for color. Though some of it will inevitably stay white, there will be plenty of blue when it’s finished! I’ve been finding all kinds of wonderful Japanese style water pictures using Google, and I want to draw them all! I’m not sure why I’m sticking with this style lately, but originally I was just going to make one, but then somebody recognized the style and they seemed to like it, so I thought, “Maybe others will too. I might keep it up for awhile.” I’m also learning lots of new stuff and probably once I’m finished with the current drawing I’m working on, I’ll start to make my own completely from scratch. While also adding in my own style more and more as I go along.

So, I hit a pretty big milestone on my Facebook fan page last night. I hit 100 page likes! Currently it’s sitting at 108. Pretty crazy, right? Seems the advertising money Facebook credited me with is really paying off. I mean, it’s a smart business decision on their part because advertising on Facebook obviously works. Once I’m out of that free credit, Facebook assumes that I’ll want to continue paying in order to get even more likes and post views. Clever there, Facebook. However, I was never interested in officially advertising with Facebook in order to gain followers. I was really hoping my fans would like, comment, and share my content instead, and that would be enough. There are a few dedicated fans that do it pretty regularly, but I’ve noticed that the number of viewers I get for each post steadily drops off. When I started out I had anywhere between 50-150 eyes on my posts, where now I’m lucky to hit 20 per post. I spent $6 of that credit money (Facebook gave me $40, I think it was) on a single post and it’s already hit 1,214 people! Ridiculous. The “post boost” hasn’t even ran it’s course yet! Though I understand what Facebook is doing, it certainly makes starting a business tough, eh? Apparently you gotta spend money to make money.

I’m so thankful for the support I get from my fans, friends, and family though. As far as art and creativity in general, without other people finding value in your work, there really isn’t a solid purpose to making it. It may sound crazy to say that, and it does seem so for me, at least. But, of course, when I build something creatively, it’s exciting and often challenging. I do find value in my own work, but the actual “artwork” (you can find excitement and challenges in many other non creative exercises) is only made for other people to consume. I want to make people feel something. So, in a round about way, I’m trying to say thanks to everyone that’s ever shared, commented on, or liked any of my posts! Getting those eyes on my content, I feel, is impossible without you.

Facebook Monies! Day 156

Photo of "Rough Waters"

Here we go. Now this is turning out pretty awesome. I made Japanese style water scene with computer printout paper, a 2H pencil to get things started, various colored pencils, and an ultra thin Sharpie marker. I still have the boat to color yet, and I hope I don’t make it too dark because I actually like it all white the way it is. I’m even considering just leaving it alone and calling this a finished piece. However, I think I do need to add color. The white on white bugs me a bit with the surf there under the boat.

So, today I added a new header today on my home page that now includes a list of supporters that have helped me out financially. I went back and forth, and back and forth again, trying to make a decision on whether I should include the amounts they have given. Ultimately I decided that honesty is the best way to go and so I displayed the full amounts for each person. I know if I gave someone money because I enjoyed their content, I would think it was pretty cool to get my name up there. If I didn’t include the dollar amount that was given, then it would be a little ambiguous what that wall was all about.

I currently have the outlining ideas mostly figured out for the two supporter drawings I have left to do (If you gift me $10 or more, I mail you a personal drawing). So I’ll likely get both of them started tomorrow, as well as mail away the one I’ve already completed. Assuming I receive any more money in the future in this way, I’ll have to figure out a better way to do the drawings. It’s a bit hard to explain, but I would like to find a process to adhere to. Some rules maybe. I want everyone to receive the same quality of drawing and never to feel underwhelmed. I’m sending out the drawings as more of a thank you note, I guess. Yet I’m still spending about an hour on each.

So, Facebook gave me about $40 to go towards advertising last night. I’ve spent $5 today and already gained another 12 likes on my page. That’s 12 more people following my content on Facebook. I’m stoked! That’s 97 as of this moment. I can’t even imagine what a group of 97 people would look like, but all of them clicked the “like” button in order to see my daily updates and content. I’m feeling quite overwhelmed here!

If you like anything I do, please go ahead and “like” my Facebook artist fan page. Share anything you want, or go ahead and comment. I appreciate any feedback or suggestions and would love to know what people are checking out either on my website here, or over there on Facebook. Thanks for all the support and encouragement everyone has given. You all rock.

Kinda Funny: Day 155

Pencil/pen drawing on paper

I sure had a hell of a time taking a photo of this one. Why? Either because my camera on my tablet really does suck, or it’s the lighting. Likely both. I really should start with my daily drawings earlier in the day so when I finish, it’s still daylight. Photos of my artwork look so much better in the natural sunlight than they do under my piddly desk lamp. Well, considering I’m not finished with this yet and will likely be working on this particular picture again tomorrow, the final version’s photo should be much higher quality than this was.

So, it looks like adding that “leave tip” button was a pretty good idea! So far I’m up to $81 ($4 is what Paypal took for their services, which is reasonable) and every cent of that money will go a long ways in helping me keep this up. Seeing as it’s already in a Paypal account, I could go nuts on ordering some art supplies from somewhere online. I’m not sure what I’ll actually do yet, but it’s there when I need it. I kind of want to leave it and see if it goes up at all. Maybe try to hit $100 or something.

I’ve been watching Kinda Funny videos for a little while now (they are still fairly new) and I like how they’ve been handling themselves when it comes to receiving money. Whenever they get “donations” they list the supporters right on their live streams, as well as talk about the current number of dollars they’re at . It’s kind of exciting to see it continue to grow as the days go on. I certainly don’t ever expect any more money to come my way in this manner, but it’s happened three times already so who knows what’s going to happen from here on out. Anything seems possible right now.

I’ve already finished the first of three pictures that I’ll be mailing out to my own supporters. I will likely finish another one tomorrow and proceed to mail them out on Monday. As far as the “Wall of Supporters” goes, I haven’t got started on that yet. Perhaps later tonight I’ll try and nail a proper idea down and at least get started on it. I’m still unsure whether to mention the amounts that have been given from each person, or how long each individual should be listed on the wall. I say that because as time goes on the list needs to stay updated and continue to evolve and all that. I was thinking every 30 days or so I should update it. All of this is assuming whether I get any more supporters that actually need to go up on the wall. So we’ll see how that goes. One step at a time, I guess.

Thanks for checking this out! If you have any suggestions at all, please please say so in the comments section below.

Flower: Day 148

Drawing from Flower

Hello, everyone. I’m creeping up to day 150, and I’m pretty sure I’m not going to make a big deal out of it, 150 just doesn’t sound nearly as awesome as 200. Then again, day 185.5 is technically the half way point to the end of this project. I’m quite sure I’ll just stick to celebrating and looking back every 100 days.

I was planning on coloring the picture I drew yesterday (Another “No Man’s Sky” picture) but I’ve been playing Flower for Playstation 4 today and I took a few screenshots. I decided to draw one of them and it turned out pretty great! If I had enough colored pencils it would of turned out even better, but alas, I need to get some new ones. I don’t even have black anymore! Terrible.

So, I’m still trying to figure out what I should do to start making a little bit of money with this website. The idea still sounds a little nuts to me. Making any amount of money doing something I love, from complete strangers, is just something that doesn’t seem possible. Though, that possibility is out there. I think I just need to figure out exactly what I’m good at (if anything really) and where to market it. I’m pretty sure I can figure out the “how” as far as marketing is concerned. I’ve been reading up on it and learning for more than a few years now. I’ll just need to set a goal and then plan it out.

My sister once mentioned that it would be a neat idea to put a donate link on my website. Though, I don’t get near enough visitors for that to be feasible, and I think I would feel a little weird doing that. What do you think?

Alien Beach: Day 147

Drawing from No Man's Sky

Toady I continue with my No Man’s Sky drawings. This one shows a first person view of an alien beach with another planet looming overhead. I’ll no doubt color this for tomorrow’s artwork. Which should prove to be quite fun. I love knowing what work is ahead because then I don’t have to wrack my brains trying to figure out what to do next. It’s already planned out. Good stuff.

Distractions: Day 146

Planet from No Man's Sky

My new Playstation 4 is quite the distraction. I should of been more prepared. It’s 11:35pm right now and I’m just doing my daily post right now. Ridiculous! I should absolutely put more effort into doing at least the drawing bits earlier in the day. I mean, I was up late last night with it being New Years Eve and all. Therefore, I slept a bit of the day away today. Even so, I need to take this project a bit more seriously before I completely miss a day due to distractions and forgetfulness.

I can’t remember how much I explained about this picture when I made my post yesterday, but I’m going to go ahead and explain a couple things about this picture. First off, it’s a drawing of a planet shown off in an early game demo. The game is called No Man’s Sky and I’m super excited about it. Like, to a ridiculous level. It’s a sci-fi game that procedurally generates planets, plant and animal life, and technology in the form of space stations and good old space ships. In fact, there’s supposed to be so many star systems and locations that it would be literally impossible to visit all of them in a life time. The main thing I’m interested in is going to some gorgeous planets and taking pictures of it’s diverse wildlife and locations, and then doing some artwork using those photos.

Drawing planets and wildlife that no other player has ever set foot upon is pretty mind blowing. I can’t think of a better way to explain how excited I am about this. It’s pretty much the main reason why I wanted to pick up a Playstation 4 sooner than later. Now that I have one, I’ll just have to sit patiently until the game is released, which is apparently sometime in 2015.

No Man’s Sky: Day 145

NoMansSky

Wow. You can hardly see this sketch! I guess I did draw it with a pretty light pencil. I may have to go over it in pen for tomorrow. Anyways, it’s a picture from No Man’s Sky. The video game coming next year to Playstation 4. I am so unbelievably excited for this infinite sci-fi adventure! Each planet is about the actual size of our Earth. The galaxy in the game holds billions of stars, with so many more planets! It’s insane, and I can’t wait.

Today, on New Years 2014, I bought myself a Playstation 4. No, I’m not really financially able to do so, but I traded in whatever I could to get the price down as low as I could. The main reason was that I didn’t want to miss out on the last day of the Boxing Day deals at a particular store here in town. Also, I’ve been getting a lot of interesting signs from the Universe lately that I should do this for myself. I even arrived at the store 10 minutes before closing (again, on the last day of the sale!) and they even through in a PS4 camera. So, now I’m all set. I decided to do a 20 minute sketch and post this before I even open the Playstation box. So, now that I’m all done here… HAPPY NEW YEARS TO EVERYONE!

EDIT: Oh yes! I almost forgot because I’m anxious to get to my new toy. Congratulations to Crystal Moody for completely completing her year of creative habits! Please, go check her site out here and send her some congratulations! I know she really appreciates it.
