Globby Ink: Day 13

wpid-p_20140821_134821.jpg

Well, this kind of sucks. I went out last night to grab some nice black gel pens to ink my sketches, and the pens don’t really do any of the things I wanted them to do. I can’t use them to ink over pencil because they stop working almost right away, like any regular ball point pen. I only used the pen over a 2H octo-guy drawing a couple of times, and now the pen doesn’t produce consistent ink trails. Quite annoying. Also, the ink globs at certain points (Pretty sure it’s because I had to go back and ink again in spots) and so it smeared in a few places. My pencils also pick up some of the ink and that produces small black marks.

Sigh! Not happy with my purchase. Perhaps next I should try felt tipped pens. I’ll maybe do some research before I get more. Also, I completely forgot to look for different kinds of drawing paper while I was out last night. I think my paper still needs an upgrade.

I’m going away this weekend, so starting tomorrow I’m going to have to do my drawing wherever I am. Then get a net connection and post it. I probably won’t be writing all that much while I’m away. We’ll see though. Camping! And partying. Drinking. Sleeping. This is going to be a challenge me thinks.

Practicing Shading Techniques: Day 11

doodle phtograph

I just did a few doodles today, as I was pretty much just trying out some shading tehniques. However, I discovered that the paper I’m using just doesn’t work well with colored pencils. They just don’t meld correctly when I try to mix them. I have some other sketchbooks around somewhere, I’ll have to try them out later today.

It’s funny, I’m finding that I enjoy working with pencils and paper more than my digital methods. I keep trying to go back to my drawing tablet, but I’m having an easier time getting my ideas down on actual paper. I’ll keep up the real drawing for awhile yet, I’m sure.

Next up, trying out some different types of paper.

Inside my Head: Day 9

"Tentacle Creature" created by Robert Chapman

I’m really happy with how this guy turned out. Still not exactly sure what it is though, but it looks pretty cool. I kind of wish I tried to add some color, but I don’t want to mess it up. So it’s staying just how it is for now.

My thoughts have been quite complicated and a little confusing lately. Wondering if I’m where I’m supposed to be, or doing all I can to be where I want to be. Or if thinking about that even matters. If I didn’t have the brilliant friends that I have (you know who you are) then thinking this way might lead to negativity and maybe even depression. Instead it all stays positive, and fascinating. Being inside this head sure is quite the adventure.

I’ll be trying my hardest to keep up with my drawing. It’s been incredibly therapeutic for me to get all my thoughts out into my artwork. I haven’t been so good at the daily writing part of my daily posts, but I seem to be getting better as time goes on. It’s more difficult than I thought to write about what I do daily, and what inspires me.

I’m done for now, but I’ll keep doing daily updates. I wonder if it would be a good idea to do a monthly recap where I can reflect on stuff.

Saturn-like: Day 8

Saturn

A pretty boring weekend so far. I have zero plans for my Saturday, so I spent a few hours messing around with the different pencils I own. Finding the right colors that I wanted to inevitably use for today’s project. I’m hoping that I can find something else to do today!

Yesterday I created a quick space scene with Photoshop, while today I tried doing something similar with pencils and paper. I only filled out about half of the page, but it turned out pretty good! I did alter a few things in Photoshop after taking the picture. The contrast was adjusted a tad, and I made the stars way brighter than they were with the original. Overall I’m happy with how it turned out, but I think I’ll stick with Photoshop for space scenes in the future. This was a pretty fun project though.

I’m really enjoying going back and forth from digital artwork to the real world stuff. I’m going to keep this up for awhile. I would even like to find other ways to create artwork as well. I have some ideas on how to keep things interesting in the future when I could potentially get bored of using the same two mediums. I’ll keep the ideas to myself for now though. It should be a nice surprise in the future.

Space, The Final Frontier: Day 7

Space Scene created by Robert Chapman

There! I kept my work short today as I’ve barely been home or near an internet connection. I made a nice little Photoshop space scene I made in about 25 minutes. I haven’t done one of these in months. But the last time I made a space scene I made a few sheets of paper (cheat sheets, I guess) to help me create similar effects for future drawings.

I wasn’t sure when I was going to get my drawing done today. At around midnight last night, a friend offered me a bowl of homemade chili. The only catch was that I had to get out of bed, get dressed, and walk over there. I went. And after hanging out and getting home at around 3am, I was wondering when I would find the time to get my daily art post completed the following day. I was actually worried about missing a day. I guess a week is enough time to get into a pretty good routine.

Emily and Me: Day 3

"Old Lines" drawing by Robert Chapman

Lots of fun drawing this with traditional pencils and paper this morning. Haven’t done that in years. Even used my pencil case from high-school. I woke up, took my supplies to my mom’s place, and worked on this while sipping my coffee.

My sister and her youngest daughter, Emily, came by for a visit. Emily and I drew together for an hour or so. She explained her plan for the creature she wanted to draw, and proceeded to follow through with every detail. Here’s what she came up with.

Anything at All: Day 2

ColoredMish

I wanted to do something with a little more color today, so this is what I ended up with. It took me a little while to complete. Maybe a couple hours. Was fun for a little while, but after an hour I just wanted it done. I had to make sure to keep it as consistent as I could throughout as I didn’t want my impatience to show. I’m glad I added the color in the background.

My posts won’t often be detailed pieces that take hours to complete. I just happened to have the the time to do it. The main purpose of this is to get me in front of my computer, or do something with paper and pencils, and drawing something, anything at all. Then post it and discuss why I did what I did. Pretty simple.  Some days (most days?) it could be just some simple sketches or maybe just getting some ideas down.

So, day 2 complete! Hopefully tomorrow I can work on creating a new header image for the website. The one up there, as I’m writing this, is just a stock photo from WordPress. Gotta change that!
