Day 200 of my Year of Creative Habits Project

Space Vessel drawing

Welcome to my 200th day in a row of drawing, posting, and sharing my artwork. I’ve been going through the previous 100 posts, and the first thing I noticed is that there is a lot more stand-out artwork to share in this post today, then there was back when I did my 100th post. Which at the time I thought was a pretty huge post itself! I think today’s will surpass that one by a mile (it did). So, with the introduction out of the way, here’s some of my favorites from the past 100 days.

Failing Before Finding Success: Day 199

Pop Art version of my destroyed alien city

I spent some time today going through the past 100 days of artwork (and saving some of the images to my hdd) to prepare for my 200th post tomorrow. I plan on going back and reading all 100 of them too, and hopefully that will give me some insight into how far I’ve come during that time. Or perhaps I feel exactly the same as I did a few months ago and nothing’s changed at all! We’ll just have to see…

Is it Finished? Day 198

Destroyed Alien City

I was afraid that I wasn’t going to have enough time today to get anything done because I’m heading out to a hockey game shortly, but it turns out I’m quite satisfied with the progress I made today. I was able to do another row of window wreckage, got started on some rubble on the ground, and I added some effects on one of the buildings on the left side so it looks like the tentacle is swiping it. Not too shabby. I still plan to do a crazy amount of touch ups on almost everything, but that will be something I’ll tackle sometime this week.

I want to get ready to go, so I’ll cut this pretty short for today. I do want to mention, however, that I’m just a couple days away from hitting my 200th day. So on Tuesday I plan to go over everything I’ve been doing for the past 100 days. So that’s day 100 to 200 altogether. I’ll pick out a bunch of my favorite artwork and try and reflect on each one. Should be fun! Hope everyone has a fantastic week.

On Location: Day 197

Destroyed Alien City

So today, the heat seems to be off in my apartment building. It’s usually quite cold in here during the winter as it is, but this was ridiculous. I decided to get started on my drawing, despite the cold, and then the power went out. I assume this is related to the heating issue though, so I guess they’re working on it. I was able to save what little work I had done because my laptop switched to the battery. The power continued to go on and off for the next hour, so I then decided to get out of the house. I took my laptop with me and worked on this painting for about an hour.

I added a lot of detail to make the buildings look even more deteriorated. The buildings on the left still need a lot of work though, so I’ll save that for tomorrow. I’m not sure how much time I’ll have to draw tomorrow, because I’ll be away for most of the day I think. I might have to get started on it pretty early in the day if I hope to get something done, let alone posted.

Tentacles: Day 196

Destroyed Alien City

What is even happening in this scene anymore? I just went in a completely different direction with this today, and it was so much fun to make. It’s like when you’re talking to someone about the newest episode of Game of Thrones, and you go off on a tangent about how you couldn’t live in a world like that because they haven’t invented ice cream. That’s what I do when I’m drawing.

Fire in the Sky: Day 195

Warped Abandoned Cityscape

I’m still working on this painting! For today I added some much needed detail to those windows. Even though I was originally going for an abstract feel, I’m attempting to make those windows a little more window-like, rather than just blobs of paint. So far, they’re turning out well. Ignore the fact that right now the windows are reflecting a decent amount of light even though the scene is during the night. What I’m thinking of doing is trying to find a way to make the object in the sky emit some light. Like you would expect a proper alien anomaly to produce. That’s the idea right now anyways.

I’ve also added some detail to the buildings there. It actually took a couple hours to do all that I did today, even though the results don’t look a whole lot different from the day before. Well, I just went and looked and I guess the differences are significant enough. Doing each one of those windows by hand took forever. By the time I was on to the last building, I was really forcing myself to take my time and make sure I did a good enough job, because I was really sick and tired of doing the windows at that point!

So next up is making that object in the sky brighter! I’ll perhaps even make it look completely different, because right now I’m not too sure if I’m committed to how it looks right now. What do you think? Change it up? It shouldn’t be a massive change, but I want it to be a bit more obvious when someone looks at this painting for the first time, what the heck that thing is! Right now, it’s pretty ambiguous, I think. I love the idea of a mysterious object in the sky, but I want it to feel like a big ball of energy that could perhaps be an alien spaceship. That’s the feeling I want to get across.

Pencils First: Day 194

Warped Abandoned Cityscape

Today felt like a super productive day as I only painted for an hour or so, but it felt like a got a lot done overall. Usually I sit down to draw and spend an hour or two figuring out what I’m going to do, and then fail for a couple hours until I get a better idea. Today though, I found a comfortable way to use my drawing tablet and my laptop and still accurately paint with it. Usually I struggle, even after using these tools for a couple years now, with finding a proper way to sit comfortably and still use the tablet with any accuracy.
