Practicing Shading Techniques: Day 11

doodle phtograph

I just did a few doodles today, as I was pretty much just trying out some shading tehniques. However, I discovered that the paper I’m using just doesn’t work well with colored pencils. They just don’t meld correctly when I try to mix them. I have some other sketchbooks around somewhere, I’ll have to try them out later today.

It’s funny, I’m finding that I enjoy working with pencils and paper more than my digital methods. I keep trying to go back to my drawing tablet, but I’m having an easier time getting my ideas down on actual paper. I’ll keep up the real drawing for awhile yet, I’m sure.

Next up, trying out some different types of paper.

A Gift for a Lady: Day 10

tentacle monster in a flower drawing

So I did end up adding more to my work from yesterday. Once again, quite happy with how it turned out. It’s a flower! I can just imagine how this octo-flower thing would look all closed up, like a black bulb in the center of the flower. Ready to eat unsuspecting people! Yup, it’s a big person-eating flower.

Alright, well.. I actually made this for someone. I’m hoping the color isn’t too much. Maybe I should of left it black and white. I dunno. I made this for someone I’ve never even spoken to before. She lives (I hope) in an apartment building near me. Same building my mom lives in. Pretty sure I know what floor the girl is on as well. I left the drawing in an envelope addressed to her. Well, since I don’t even know her name (and the drawing was anonymous) I left it in an envelope with some details that are quite obviously, and uniquely, her. Appropriate stuff, of course. Hell, I don’t even think anyone else in that building knows what a “labret” even is.

Anyways, no idea if it got to her, I just know that the envelope is gone. Someone grabbed it, at least. I might do another one in a month or something. We’ll see if I’m brave enough.

Just so everyone knows here, I don’t normally do creepy stuff like this. (Was it creepy?) Ever, actually. But honestly (and I do realize how sappy this might seem. I dunno) I see her around a lot, but never smiling, so I thought that if there’s even a chance this could…. well, I hope you get the picture. Ugh. I’m not finishing that sentence.

Inside my Head: Day 9

"Tentacle Creature" created by Robert Chapman

I’m really happy with how this guy turned out. Still not exactly sure what it is though, but it looks pretty cool. I kind of wish I tried to add some color, but I don’t want to mess it up. So it’s staying just how it is for now.

My thoughts have been quite complicated and a little confusing lately. Wondering if I’m where I’m supposed to be, or doing all I can to be where I want to be. Or if thinking about that even matters. If I didn’t have the brilliant friends that I have (you know who you are) then thinking this way might lead to negativity and maybe even depression. Instead it all stays positive, and fascinating. Being inside this head sure is quite the adventure.

I’ll be trying my hardest to keep up with my drawing. It’s been incredibly therapeutic for me to get all my thoughts out into my artwork. I haven’t been so good at the daily writing part of my daily posts, but I seem to be getting better as time goes on. It’s more difficult than I thought to write about what I do daily, and what inspires me.

I’m done for now, but I’ll keep doing daily updates. I wonder if it would be a good idea to do a monthly recap where I can reflect on stuff.

Versus: Day 6

Versus

Today was the first day I struggled a bit. I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to focus on drawing things I’m familiar with rather than always trying something new. I would also (as I’m sure I’ve mentioned before) like to try and keep things simple. Not spend hours trying to do something better than the day before. No more of that. Tomorrow I’m just going to keep things simple and not spend hours drawing. There, I’ve written it down on here a few times so far, so I have to listen eventually! Right?

What I drew today is pretty much a comic panel.  I have some books on comic drawing and I might read some tonight so I can try some more comic panel drawing tomorrow. I re-used and edited a couple creatures from my stash today. I threw them together to see how well they would mesh. They definitely look like they are from two completely different worlds, but I love that! Reminds me of Marvel Vs Capcom 2, where you had sprite characters that were clearly from completely different video game series’! Actually, I should somehow do this with some of my other creations. Like a mash-up of everything I’ve done. Whoa, that would be kinda neat actually. I’ll probably never follow through with that idea! It sounds neat in my head, but in practice I don’t think it would work at all as the creatures and worlds I create are too different from one another.

I want to draw people in the future. I mean, well… obviously I want to draw future-people, like with laser guns and stuff, but I mean sometime in the near-future I want to try drawing people. I have to suck it up and just see what I end up with. I know it’ll suck for awhile, as I’ve always avoided drawing people, but I’ll post it anyways. Then continue doing it for a week, or longer, to see if there’s any change. We’ll see. I’m no good at planning things out! I suck at planning almost as much as I suck at drawing people.

New Website Design: Day 4

Spine

Today I had trouble deciding whether I would draw on paper, or go back to digital. I eventually chose to try digital once I figured out a way to actually get comfortable. As my computer/tablet setup isn’t so great right now. As long as I’m not sitting here for hours on end, hunched over my computer, then I’m more or less fine.

I think it will be right back to proper pencils and paper tomorrow as I don’t plan to be at home for some of the day. Might as well get outside, bring my supplies, and see what I can come up with. Today, I was hoping to do a picture of Angel from the very early X-Men comics. Which I’ve been reading a lot lately. Found a good picture in issue #17, but while I was getting set up I was feeling uneasy about the idea. It’s going to be tough to draw humanoid characters. I’ve never been good at it, even when I try silly looking cartoon characters. Things always look off. We’ll see, still might save that for another day, but I’ll give it some more thought tomorrow.

EDIT: I should also mention down here that I’ve finally designed this website properly. Got some nice header graphics going on up there, and I welcome anybody interested in seeing all kinds of my random artwork to visit the Gallery page. Really happy with how everything is progressing so far!

Emily and Me: Day 3

"Old Lines" drawing by Robert Chapman

Lots of fun drawing this with traditional pencils and paper this morning. Haven’t done that in years. Even used my pencil case from high-school. I woke up, took my supplies to my mom’s place, and worked on this while sipping my coffee.

My sister and her youngest daughter, Emily, came by for a visit. Emily and I drew together for an hour or so. She explained her plan for the creature she wanted to draw, and proceeded to follow through with every detail. Here’s what she came up with.
