Details: Day 291

My Spaceship by Robert Chapman

Besides some of the angles being a bit off, I think this spaceship is coming along nicely. The boosters in the back there are way off center, so I’ll need to work on altering that a bit tomorrow. Other than that, I think I actually have some of the angles pretty decent. That’s always been my least favorite part about drawing, getting the angles right. That’s why I’ve always had trouble drawing Humans. If an angle is off just by a little bit, the eye easily catches the mistake.

When you draw monsters and abstract designs, like I’ve been doing for most of my life as an artist, a lot of the time it doesn’t matter if you have your details correct. One arm can be bigger than the other, you can throw one eyeball right in the middle of a monsters face, or throw some on his shoulder. Nobody will complain that this creature has too many eyeballs.

My favorite part about drawing the pictures I’ve been doing lately – once I get the basic shapes done – is zooming in, selecting a small paint brush, and creating all kinds of tiny details. With today’s version of the picture, I went in and added some detail to the blue plasma coming out the back, I added some detail to the engine tubes, made some marks on the wings (and added two more wings!), and made the weapons fire an interesting looking laser. Much of the overall picture could very well change by the time I’m done, but I’m pretty happy with the details so far.

Oh, and I also went around to every piece of the hull and added bright and dark spots. I think this helps add more dimension to everything. This is the first time I’m doing something quite like this using the Gaussian blur feature in Photoshop. I used it a little bit in the wizard library picture, but just for shadows under some of the objects. I can use the same technique to add shiny bits.

So, that’s all from me today! Thanks for checking it out. The more I look at this picture the more those off center engine tubes (Yup, I’m calling them that) are bugging me. I’ll definitely have to fix them for tomorrow! Is there anything else that doesn’t quite look right? Or maybe you have some suggestions? Perhaps I’ll make the ship smaller eventually, and have him blowing up another ship in a big fiery (fiery in space? I dunno) explosion.

This should be the ship those robots use in your future super successful comic 🙂 I’d like to see this baby in action fighting other ships haha

    • Future successful comic? Hmm that sounds pretty cool to me. I think my androids could definitely travel around in this thing.
