Time to do Something: Day 162

Octoguy

Well, I was able to squeeze a little more ink out of the pen I was using yesterday. It flows terribly onto the page, but it does help to make everything stand out. I can’t believe I still have to get through at least one more day before my new tools/toys arrive! The wait is pretty unbearable, but I’m managing.

I was going to say, “I think sometime tonight I’m going to start setting up accounts with some art websites…” etc. However, I am going to DO it. Not simply consider doing it. It’s something I need to do, and it’s something that will no doubt help me feel better about my artwork. I mentioned it a couple days ago, but I’ll briefly mention it again. Those websites are RedBubble, Society6, Inprnt, and DesignByHumans. And I’m going to create my own accounts on those pages, and put up as much artwork as I can and see if anyone is interested in buying them. I don’t expect to make much, if anything at all, because those sites take the vast majority of the profits, but I need to do something. At least, that’s how I’m feeling this weekend. There are so many positives and negatives about this whole idea that I’m still unsure how I feel about it, but at least I’m doing “something”.

Everything has to be Perfect! Day 161

Stupid thing

Blaaaaaah! Everything I did today to try and be creative just failed miserably. I mean, I wasn’t even in the mood to draw to begin with, but I tried anyways. I think this is the first time in a long while, maybe since I first started, that I just wasn’t feeling it. I would of done nothing today if it wouldn’t of meant regretting that I missed a single day when tomorrow comes around. Now that I’m typing this out and just about done for the day, I guess I’m feeling a little bit better.

I was expecting my new art supplies to arrive in the mail today, and when it didn’t that’s when my mood began to go downhill. I started drawing and then my last pen ran out of ink. If you look closely at today’s picture, the ink (on the little circles) is all messed up. It’s not perfect? Everything has to be perfect!

Anyways, I still wasn’t in the mood to do any of this after my pen died, but I pressed onward by coloring in those little circles. My dark green colored pencil breaks, then again ….now it’s too short to hold properly and won’t sharpen. Blaaaaah! So I started filling in the lighter green and the exact same frickin thing happens! Okay, okay… nothing’s gonna stop me from drawing a big red monster coming out of the shadows in the background! And well… that kinda turned out pretty cool actually.

New Art Supplies: Day 160

Photograph of pencil/pen drawing

For today, I finished the last drawing I had to do for those that supported me financially last week, and I drew the orange guy you see above! As far as the supporter drawings are concerned,  I knew what I was drawing for Assassin (Rene Moran) a few days ago, and I think it turned out pretty awesome. I almost considered asking him if I could use it for my drawing of the day on this website, but quickly decided against it as I want to keep all of the personal drawings I send out to stay personal. I think it would mean more if no one else has really seen their drawings. I mean, I have no problem with the recipients sharing them online, I just want to keep the process nice and simple; draw something, maybe write a message on the page, sign it, date it, and mail it away. I figure if I change the process up for anyone, then that could bring potential problems. You never know, so I just want to make sure everyone gets the exact same treatment.

I kind of forgot to mention in yesterday’s post that I went ahead and ordered those art supplies from Currys.com. I ordered two different kinds of drawing paper, a set of drawing pens, and some expensive colored pencils. When all was said and done it came to $85, so all of your monies ($81 in total) all went to new art supplies! Hopefully you guys can see the difference in what I post coming up in the next few days or so. Whenever the shipment arrives. It’s shipping from a place just a few hours from where I live, so I’m hoping it’s here tomorrow (Friday), but we’ll see. I’m trying to be patient, but I really do have a hard time waiting for packages to arrive. It’s like Christmas!

Surfing Pikachu: Day 159

Pencil/pen drawing

Today, I spent an hour or so adding in the sun to finish up my Japanese style wavey scene. I’m super happy with how it all turned out. I decided to go ahead and recreate the entire picture in Photoshop and that also turned out really well! I’m noticing that I missed a few details, like some of the blue shading at the bottom, and the picture totally needs a surfing Pikachu but I was pretty distracted when I was finishing it up. Even so it was a fun little project.

I’m going back and forth on how exactly I should sell my artwork online. I mean, on one hand you have websites like Society6, RedBubble, Inprnt, and DesignByHumans. Then on the other hand you have Etsy, or an online store that I build myself directing from my website. With the former options, the vast majority of the profits go to them, but they handle most of the work and take care of the expenses of printing and mailing. With the latter options, especially with my own store, I get most of the profits, but there’s a lot more work to be done as I have to get the prints done myself, and send them out, etc. However, then I know exactly what kind of print quality my fans are getting. They deal through me, and when people ask, “Hey, where did you get that picture on your wall?” they’ll respond with, “Oh, this guy Robert Chapman.” rather than, “Oh, from some website called Society6.” I’m honestly considering using both options, and it’s probably easier for me to get started with the first four websites I mentioned, as I’m not quite set to do all of the work yet. That will come in time as I gain knowledge and experience. I just won’t give them my highest quality stuff. I’ll stick to a certain marketable style with those sites where they get almost all of the profit. I don’t know, not sure what to do.

That all being said, there’s no reason I can’t do all of it. Have a whole whack of fun characters and designs up on those mass market websites and hopefully make a few dollars here and there. Then for my big projects that I’m really proud of, sell my own prints (or even one of a kind stuff maybe) through my website and get them printed and mailed myself. Any suggestions?

High School Pencil Case: Day 158

"White Waves" photo of pencil/pen drawing

I’ve kind of begun to realize that the pictures I’m making, all the physical drawings and such, are all made with very basic supplies. You know, a bunch of random colored pencils left over from my highschool days 100 years ago, dollar store paper, whatever pens and markers I can find at Walmart or under/inside living room furniture. Those sort of things are what I’m used to drawing with. You scrounge up whatever you can find and do your best to make something awesome, or at the very least, something moderately interesting. Because of the money I’ve received from my super fans lately ($81 sitting in my Paypal account), I’ve decided to find a place online and order some proper supplies.

After a bit of research, I found what I think to be the right combination of pens, pencils, and paper, that should fit what I’m trying to do. All from this website here: www.Currys.com. I haven’t sent away the order as of this moment, because I’m still going through the completion process. I’m also hoping (assuming really) that they use Paypal. I mean, who doesn’t use Paypal as far as online retailers go?

I’m hoping that when I receive my new supplies that I really notice a massive difference in the quality of my physical work. I mean, I’m even thinking of buying the $50 colored pencil set rather than the $30 on I currently ordered. Might as well spend all of the donated money, right? It’s going into something that will definitely help me in the long run. If I decide to go ahead and upgrade the pencils then I’ll probably need to remove something from the order so it doesn’t exceed $81. I’ll have to figure out what I’m going to do. If there are any artists out there with any suggestions at all, please let me know in the comments! I really appreciate all the Facebook likes I’ve received lately and I’m hoping there are some artists in there somewhere.

Japanese Style: Day 157

Photo of pencil/pen drawing

Today’s picture is a little dull, but hopefully you can see the potential for color. Though some of it will inevitably stay white, there will be plenty of blue when it’s finished! I’ve been finding all kinds of wonderful Japanese style water pictures using Google, and I want to draw them all! I’m not sure why I’m sticking with this style lately, but originally I was just going to make one, but then somebody recognized the style and they seemed to like it, so I thought, “Maybe others will too. I might keep it up for awhile.” I’m also learning lots of new stuff and probably once I’m finished with the current drawing I’m working on, I’ll start to make my own completely from scratch. While also adding in my own style more and more as I go along.

So, I hit a pretty big milestone on my Facebook fan page last night. I hit 100 page likes! Currently it’s sitting at 108. Pretty crazy, right? Seems the advertising money Facebook credited me with is really paying off. I mean, it’s a smart business decision on their part because advertising on Facebook obviously works. Once I’m out of that free credit, Facebook assumes that I’ll want to continue paying in order to get even more likes and post views. Clever there, Facebook. However, I was never interested in officially advertising with Facebook in order to gain followers. I was really hoping my fans would like, comment, and share my content instead, and that would be enough. There are a few dedicated fans that do it pretty regularly, but I’ve noticed that the number of viewers I get for each post steadily drops off. When I started out I had anywhere between 50-150 eyes on my posts, where now I’m lucky to hit 20 per post. I spent $6 of that credit money (Facebook gave me $40, I think it was) on a single post and it’s already hit 1,214 people! Ridiculous. The “post boost” hasn’t even ran it’s course yet! Though I understand what Facebook is doing, it certainly makes starting a business tough, eh? Apparently you gotta spend money to make money.

I’m so thankful for the support I get from my fans, friends, and family though. As far as art and creativity in general, without other people finding value in your work, there really isn’t a solid purpose to making it. It may sound crazy to say that, and it does seem so for me, at least. But, of course, when I build something creatively, it’s exciting and often challenging. I do find value in my own work, but the actual “artwork” (you can find excitement and challenges in many other non creative exercises) is only made for other people to consume. I want to make people feel something. So, in a round about way, I’m trying to say thanks to everyone that’s ever shared, commented on, or liked any of my posts! Getting those eyes on my content, I feel, is impossible without you.

Facebook Monies! Day 156

Photo of "Rough Waters"

Here we go. Now this is turning out pretty awesome. I made Japanese style water scene with computer printout paper, a 2H pencil to get things started, various colored pencils, and an ultra thin Sharpie marker. I still have the boat to color yet, and I hope I don’t make it too dark because I actually like it all white the way it is. I’m even considering just leaving it alone and calling this a finished piece. However, I think I do need to add color. The white on white bugs me a bit with the surf there under the boat.

So, today I added a new header today on my home page that now includes a list of supporters that have helped me out financially. I went back and forth, and back and forth again, trying to make a decision on whether I should include the amounts they have given. Ultimately I decided that honesty is the best way to go and so I displayed the full amounts for each person. I know if I gave someone money because I enjoyed their content, I would think it was pretty cool to get my name up there. If I didn’t include the dollar amount that was given, then it would be a little ambiguous what that wall was all about.

I currently have the outlining ideas mostly figured out for the two supporter drawings I have left to do (If you gift me $10 or more, I mail you a personal drawing). So I’ll likely get both of them started tomorrow, as well as mail away the one I’ve already completed. Assuming I receive any more money in the future in this way, I’ll have to figure out a better way to do the drawings. It’s a bit hard to explain, but I would like to find a process to adhere to. Some rules maybe. I want everyone to receive the same quality of drawing and never to feel underwhelmed. I’m sending out the drawings as more of a thank you note, I guess. Yet I’m still spending about an hour on each.

So, Facebook gave me about $40 to go towards advertising last night. I’ve spent $5 today and already gained another 12 likes on my page. That’s 12 more people following my content on Facebook. I’m stoked! That’s 97 as of this moment. I can’t even imagine what a group of 97 people would look like, but all of them clicked the “like” button in order to see my daily updates and content. I’m feeling quite overwhelmed here!

If you like anything I do, please go ahead and “like” my Facebook artist fan page. Share anything you want, or go ahead and comment. I appreciate any feedback or suggestions and would love to know what people are checking out either on my website here, or over there on Facebook. Thanks for all the support and encouragement everyone has given. You all rock.
